At the time of publishing the article, it was not yet clear what sparked the demonstrations, however, they come in the wake of the heightened enforcement of the Covid-19 induced lockdown by police and soldiers on Tuesday which saw most citizens getting turned away from entering Harare’s central business district (CBD). This also follows shortly after the arrest of opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s lawyer, Advocate Thabani Mpofu, on Monday.

According to social media speculation, the new measures by government were allegedly aimed at thwarting potential MDC Alliance protests outside the Harare Magistrates Court where Advocate Mpofu was to appear.
However, Information secretary Nick Mangwana insisted there was nothing in particular that was necessitating the clampdown. Taking to his official account on Twitter, Mangwana wrote,

The government has not pronounced a change in lockdown regulations. We are still on Level 2 lockdown and permitted economic activity should go ahead. Police are only enforcing the pronounced and gazetted Level 2 conditions.
